I'm single and was wondering does online dating really work?

I'm single and stay busy at work, I go out like every other week but I rarely see a girl that I'm interested in and if I do she's spoken for so I was wondering does this online dating stuff really work. I'm skeptical because profiles and stuff can all be manipulated and I really don't know what I'd be getting into but i guess thats a risk to take with online dating. So I was wondering if you guys had any success stories or should I just keep trying the "bar and club" scene?
