Patients with COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) experience shortness of breath caused by a narrowing of the airways. COPD is not reversible and becomes progressively worse over time. Although the symptoms are similar to those experienced by asthma suffers, the narrowed airway caused by an asthma attacks is reversible.
Cigarette smoking is the main cause of COPD. The diagnosis is a combination of two chronic diseases. An inflammatory response to noxious gases and particles inhaled from burning tobacco leads to chronic bronchitis in the larger airway. At the same time, the alveoli of the lungs are damaged by inflammation that leads to destruction of lung tissue and a diagnosis of emphysema.

The e-cigarette industry launched the Electronic Cigarette Association to provide a platform to speak for the producers, distributors and retailers of electronic cigarettes. The trade association was formed in 2009 in Washington, D.C. and is funded through donations and by the members. The ECA answers questions about e-cigs, provides accurate information and focuses on public relations.
The ECA provides a collective voice for both e-cigarette providers and organizations by publicizing accurate information and providing the tools necessary to opinion leaders, policy makers and the news media. By instituting a code of conduct that is industry wide, the ECA hopes to reassure the public and legislators about the safety and purpose of electronic cigarettes.

Debate about the safety of electronic cigarettes has continued since the product was first sold. Much of the information tossed about is factually incorrect but that hasn’t stopped big tobacco and big pharma from spreading the rumors.
A trade association formed last year will represent e-cigarette provides and offer a collective voice that will focus on providing truthful information to the buying public about the safety factor of e-cigarettes. The FDA has given in to powerful tobacco lobbies and issued statements warning of the potential hazards posed by e-cigs.
