Breaking Off A Relationship Respectfully
One of the hardest things to do may be ending a relationship. The longer you’ve been in that relationship for, the more difficulty you’re going to run into when it comes to that awkward time where you feel it must end.
People and circumstances change. Our aspirations, desires and outlook evolve as we mature, and what suited us in one setting may be wrong for us in another. Because of this, many, but not all, relationships come to an end at some point. It’s just one of those things.
If you’re sure that your current relationship is not right for you, then you should end it as soon as you can. Staying in a relationship that makes you uncomfortable is no good for either of you.
Of course, it won’t be easy, especially if your partner doesn’t feel the same way you do. Try to give the other person plenty of time to accept the new situation and move on. Once you’re past this difficult part things will start to improve.
Don’t forget about yourself either. Why deprive yourself of the joys you could experience by either being single and independent, or via a new relationship with someone who happens to be a better fit for you?
Anyway, here’s what I would recommend doing if you’re looking to end the relationship. Whatever you do, don’t do it via text or email, and I wouldn’t do it over the phone either. You could do it this way if you’ve been dating for anything less than a month or two, but I wouldn’t do this otherwise.
The best way is via a face to face meeting in a public place. You’ll be showing the other person respect and both of you will stay in control of your emotions, thus avoiding any embarrassing scenes. If you try to end the relationship at home, things could drag on and the other person might be reluctant to leave.
It’s something you have to do, although you’d rather not. You have to take your courage and do it, and remember that it’s best for both of you. In time, you’ll feel a lot better about yourself.
